It is a great privilege to write the Foreword for “Shoulder Replacement in Osteoarthritis” by Drs. Giuseppe Porcellini, Fabrizio Campi, and Paolo Paladini. The aim of this textbook is to make the experiences of the top surgeons with total shoulder arthroplasty in osteoarthritis widely available. The editors of “Shoulder Replacement in Osteoarthritis” are three of the leading shoulder surgeons in Italy. Their enthusiasm and collaboration in shoulder surgery are outstanding.Because of their passion and fame, 43 authors have joined to contribute to this textbook. Shoulder arthroplasty is one of the most common surgical procedures for osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint. Since the introduction of shoulder arthroplasty by Charles S. Neer II, many types of prostheses have been available.Standard type prosthesis is a combination of glenoid socket and humeral head component with a stem.Surface replacement arthroplasty preserves as much bone stock as possible while mimicking individual anatomy.Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty has a great advantage in cases with irreparable rotator cuff tears and the deltoid muscle which is not strong enough to elevate the arm. The reverse arthroplasty allows the deltoid muscle work more efficiently with an increased moment arm.If these prostheses are used in inappropriate situations, the best outcome cannot be expected. In other words, not only the surgical techniques but also the basic understandings of shoulder arthroplasty are essential for all shoulder surgeons. This textbook gives the readers a wide spectrum of knowledge about the design and history of the prostheses, indications, and surgical techniques as well as the understandings of basic concepts of these prostheses.I am sure the readers will greatly benefit from the wide and varied experiences of top surgeons in the world compiled in this textbook.
